Homeopathy reduces NSAID use in elderly

This French study found that the use of Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs) was significantly higher in elderly patients with musculo-skeletal disorders (MSD) who consulted a conventional practice general practitioner.

The study concluded, “Consulting a homeopathic physician for MSD management does not appear to represent a loss of therapeutic opportunity, and decreases the use of NSAIDs.”

Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs are prescribed to elderly people to reduce pain and stiffness associated with osteoarthritis, a condition in which the cartilage protecting joints from rubbing against each other gets worn away. This causes great pain and swelling.

It is good news that the elderly can use homeopathy and reduce their use of NSAIDS, as this type of drug has recently been shown to increase the risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE) in this study.  VTE is a blood clot which forms in a vein, and which can then be dislodged, all or a part of it, and travel in the blood. It can then cause a blockage, in the lungs for example, which could be fatal.
